Let Kids Be Kids: Why Opportunity Starts with the Basics

When we think about opportunity for young people, we often think big. But before children can focus on the future, they need the basics today.

As we recognize International Youth Day on August 12, it’s important to remember that every child deserves the chance to learn, play, explore their interests, and simply enjoy being a kid. Yet for many families, rising costs make it difficult to afford even essential items like coats, shoes, and other clothing necessities.

Children are the poorest age group in the United States, with 22.2% living in poverty. For millions of families, limited resources mean making difficult choices between essential needs, leaving items like coats, shoes, and other clothing necessities out of reach.

That’s why Operation Warm works alongside dedicated partners and supporters to help ensure children have access to brand-new coats, shoes, and sports bras. These essentials help remove everyday barriers so kids can focus less on what they’re missing and more on learning, growing, and experiencing childhood.

When children don’t have what they need, the impact extends far beyond their closets. A child without a warm coat may stay indoors instead of playing with friends. Shoes that don’t fit properly can make it difficult to participate comfortably in school activities and sports. What may seem like a small need can become a barrier to confidence, belonging, and participation.

Every coat gifted, every pair of shoes donated, and every sports bra provided represents more than a piece of clothing. It’s a child stepping onto the playground with confidence. A student feeling ready to walk into class. A young athlete participating comfortably alongside their teammates.

Opportunity doesn’t always begin with something big. Sometimes it starts with a warm coat, a new pair of shoes, or the confidence that comes from knowing you belong.

This International Youth Day, help us give children the chance to simply be kids. By meeting their most basic needs, we help create space for them to learn, grow, play, and thrive.

Join us in helping remove barriers for children by ensuring they have the essentials they need to learn, play, grow, and simply be kids.
