This month, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on our firefighter partners across the country, everyday heroes who go beyond the call of duty to serve their communities in extraordinary ways. These partnerships mean the world to us. They represent compassion, commitment, and the power of local leadership to create lasting change. One such partner is the Washington State Council of Firefighters, whose programming is led by Dean Shelton, Vice President and 8th District Representative. Their dedication to Operation Warm has made such a meaningful impact in their community.
Dean’s department has been involved with Operation Warm for several years, and the impact has been profound. “The needs of all communities continue to grow as we see more and more families struggle financially,” Dean shared. “Our initial involvement in the program was through the IAFF, and now it’s evolved into a state-level partnership with a local radio station to fund coats.”
That evolution has only deepened the connection between firefighters and the families they serve. “With the exception of the pandemic, our relationships with our communities have grown and strengthened through the program,” Dean said. “Firefighters have the platform and resources to make this program a success in so many ways.”
When asked to share a standout moment, Dean didn’t point to a single story. Instead, he reflected on the collective joy the program brings. “It’s the many faces of happiness a new coat brings to children who may not have ever experienced that before,” he said. “And it’s also the feelings the firefighters have, being in the schools, sharing this moment with staff, teachers, and of course, the students.”
Being part of a nationwide network of firefighters delivering warmth, confidence, and hope to children is something Dean values deeply. His advice to fellow firefighters considering starting a program like this? “DO IT! The program is a fairly simple concept and one that is so rewarding. Timing is everything. Start fundraising early and establish your distribution goal: one class, one school, or a whole community. Just do it.”
Dean’s passion and leadership are a reminder that even the smallest gestures, like a warm coat, can spark lasting change. Through Operation Warm, firefighters like Dean are not only protecting their communities, but they’re also building trust and making a lasting difference.
