Winter Need Doesn’t End After the Holidays

Winter Need

When the holidays pass, it can feel like winter is winding down. But for many children and families across the country, cold weather and the challenges that come with it are just beginning as the holidays are ending.

At Operation Warm, we know that winter need doesn’t follow a calendar. While seasonal giving often peaks in November and December, the reality is that children continue to face cold, snow, and unsafe conditions well into the new year. For families already struggling, the months after the holidays can be especially difficult, stretching limited resources even thinner.

Why the Need Persists Beyond December

As winter wears on, the essentials children rely on every day take a toll. Coats that fit at the start of the season may no longer fully zip. Shoes worn constantly through snow, ice, and slush can quickly wear out, leaving children exposed to the elements.

At the same time, families are facing higher heating bills, fewer work hours, or unexpected expenses, making it even harder to replace outgrown or damaged winter gear. The result is a quieter, ongoing need that often goes unseen once holiday campaigns end.

Operation Warm exists to meet that needworking with partners across the country to provide brandnew coats and shoes to children who need them whenever winter conditions demand it

More Than Warmth: Confidence and Hope

A winter coat or pair of shoes is more than protection from the cold. For children, it can mean showing up to school feeling comfortable, confident, and included. Without proper gear, kids may miss school, sit out during outdoor activities, or feel self-conscious around peers.

Operation Warm’s programs are built on dignity. Families and educators consistently tell us how meaningful it is for children to receive brand‑new coats and shoes — items that help them feel confident and included during the coldest months of the year. One school administrator told us, “The coats arrived right as the weather got very cold. Too many students were not wearing coats to school saying their old coats were too small, worn out, or lost… The next day busses were full of warm kids proudly wearing their new coats.”

Winter Need Is Ongoing — So Is Our Commitment

There’s a common misconception that winter need ends with the holidays. But winter weather and its impact on children lasts long after decorations come down. At Operation Warm, our commitment to children extends beyond any single moment or season, ensuring support continues throughout the winter months because every child deserves to feel warm, confident, and cared for.

Help Us Keep the Warmth Going

Your support makes it possible for Operation Warm to respond to the need whenever it arises. By givingpartnering, or volunteering time, you help ensure children have the coats and shoes they need to get through winter safely and with dignity.

Because winter doesn’t end with the holiday season — and neither does the need.
